6-Week Fiction/Nonfiction Writing Workshop

Where: Charlotte, NC or Zoom, according to interest

When: (flexible) We will meet 6 times, once a week, over the course of 6 weeks. Together, we will decide on a mutually agreeable day to meet.

Workshop Size: 8 writers

Description: This workshop is for fiction and narrative nonfiction writers who would like to submit one short story, essay, or excerpt of a novel, memoir, or narrative nonfiction book for group critique. You do not need to have participated in a writing workshop before. In our first meeting, I will go over workshopping guidelines and help everyone to practice the workshop process on a published story/essay. My well-structured workshop process ensures that you receive meaningful, specific, helpful, and respectful critiques (both written and discussion-based) that give you a path forward for revision.

This workshop is designed not only to make you a better writer, but a better reader. The more we sharpen our ability to discern and evaluate the stylistic and structural choices in the work of others, the more we become aware of and able to effectively manipulate these elements in our own writing.

Two writers’ submissions will be workshopped during each of the 6 classes. Submissions should be a maximum of 20 pages double-spaced in 12-point font. Each workshop participant will email a critique of each submission to the writer and me before we meet. I will read all critiques to ensure that they are respectful and helpful.

Instructor: Brooke Shaffner will teach this workshop.
