Artist Statement Workshop

Where: I will provide a comfortable meeting space in Plaza Midwood.

When: Workshops take place on two Sundays, from 2-6 pm, with one week in between to draft an artist statement.

Workshop Size: 5-10 participants

Description: In this two-day workshop totaling eight hours (four hours for each class), participants will learn how to powerfully depict their art, practice, and vision in a vibrant, succinct artist statement.

We will spend Workshop Day 1 evaluating examples of successful artist statements and the techniques that artists use to bring their art to life on the page, doing in-class writing exercises, and beginning a draft of an artist statement.

Participants will have one week in between workshops to complete a draft of their artist statement.

On Workshop Day 2, participants will workshop their artist statements with the group. Through the process of critiquing each other’s artist statements within a supportive community, participants will sharpen their ability to portray their own art and artistic vision. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have a draft of an artist statement and detailed feedback from peers and myself offering a clear path for revision.

Instructor: Since 2006, Brooke Shaffner has helped visual artists to bring their art to life in statements for artist websites; press releases; residency, grant, fellowship, and award applications; and art books. She’s helped artists win awards such as the Gottlieb Foundation Award and Pollack-Krasner Fellowship. Brooke edited the critical essays discussing the work of 40 emerging artists and the current artistic climate in the Point Suite Art Book. Her clients include Brooklyn’s 440 Gallery, installation artist Matthew McCaslin, multimedia artists Jayoung Yoon and Jayoung Chung, photographer Daniel Handal, and Active Ideas Productions.
